The rock walls / ladders subdomain predominantly captures climbing affordances or terrain that can only be navigated with upper extremity support. The subdomain also captures some terrain that could be navigated without upper extremity support, however there is something nearby that could be used (and, therefore, often is used) for upper extremity support. This directs the primary challenge of navigating the terrain from balance to strength. For example, stepping stones and beams that have any elevated surface that could be used for upper extremity support on any side receive points within this subdomain under one of the subcategories of ladders.
