Enclosed Spaces

The enclosed spaces subdomain captures terrain with a perimeter around an enclosed space that the individual navigates through, such as openings and tunnels. The subdomain predominantly captures enclosed spaces that are physically challenging to navigate through, either due to the size of the enclosed space or the obstacles within that constrain movement. However, the subdomain also captures some enclosed spaces where the focus is not on the physical challenge but rather the experience while navigating through that enclosed space. This experience could take the form of sliding through a tunnel, stimulating or calming the senses, or simply becoming comfortable with being in an enclosed space for someone who is claustrophobic.

The enclosed spaces subdomain is composed of the following two categories: openings and tunnels.

The openings category is composed of the following six subcategories: narrow, wide, floor, low, intermediate, and high.

Narrow Opening
Wide Opening
Floor Opening
Low Opening
Intermediate Opening
High Opening

The tunnels category is composed of the following four subcategories: small, obstacle, slide, and other.

Photos are examples of each type of subcategory within the enclosed spaces subdomain. Actual affordances at parks and playgrounds will look different.
